Repairing Vista from Mac

Some Windows Vista 64 have problems with files getting borked (corrupted) and thus leaving you with an inoperative OS.

There are a few reports that says ”volmgrx.sys” is corrupted, or something to that effect.

Easiest way to fix that is to replace the file, … Well, if you have a copy of the file laying around that is.

I used an Intel Mac with some special programs installed ( MacFuse and NTFS-3G bakes the cake ) and just find a way to mount the drive on the mac.

MacFUSE let’s you use 3rd party filesystem in many different ways. There are NTFS Read functionallity with MacFUSE but that is not good enough for this operation, NTFS-3G gives us the write access we need.

Now, find the file you need to replace in Finder (”Vista drive”: windows: system32: drivers).

Open up another Finder window and go to the folder where you put your new replacement file.

Drag the file from the 2nd Finder window to the 1st window, make sure that the folders are correct.

A dialog should appear saying somthing like ”This will replace …”, choose the Replace option.

Now the Vista system should be correct. Start up Windows and it should work.

Don’t forget to check the disk for errors and make sure you have all thinkable anti virus and anti spyware programs up to date and running.
